The NHL and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) have announced a new television deal that will see the trademark Saturday evening Hockey Night In Canada program remain on the air until 2014. The six-year broadcast deal, which includes national English-language broadcast and multimedia rights to NHL games in Canada, will begin when the current agreement between the CBC and the league expires after next season.
Included in the deal is a multimedia package featuring live and on-demand video streaming of all CBC's hockey broadcasts. This will be available online at CBC.ca beginning with the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Fans in Canada will be able to watch any Hockey Night in Canada broadcast on CBC.ca, regardless of what game is being broadcast in their area of the country. The online broadcasts will be free for Canadian users.
According to sources, the network has agreed to pay the NHL about $100-million a year for the rights, perhaps more, making it the steepest contract ever in Canadian TV and a drastic increase from the current NHL fee of $65-million. The new deal sees the CBC give up the rights to the Conference Finals and Stanley Cup finals to TSN, but the CBC will still retain the rights for the first two rounds of the playoffs. It will also air fewer Maple Leafs games in the regular season, 23 compared with the current 28.
