NCAA season gets underway at Hockey Webcasts

by hockeywebcasts.com staff

The 2007-08 NCAA season got underway officially last weekend with a handful of teams playng their season openers and finishing up their exhibition schedules. This weekend sees the NCAA schedule in full swing and with that comes the first of many available games that NCAA hockey fans can watch online this season at Hockey Webcasts.

The NCAA webcast schedule begins Thursday night with a non-conference matchup between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who are fresh off of a CCHA Championship a year ago, and the WCHA's University of Denver Pioneers who are the hosts of the NCAA Frozen Four tourney this year. Notre Dame, coming out of relative obscurity to capture both the regular season and league titles last year, are expected, once again to remain near the top of the CCHA standings in 2007-08. It won't be easy however; gone for the Irish is starting goalie David Brown, who had a career year and was either the leader or biting at the lead of nearly every statistical category in the nation amongst goalies. Other key members gone from a year ago include forward Jason Paige, and defenceman Wes O'Neill. On the positive end, returnees for the Irish include their top 5 scorers Erik Condra (OTT) and Garrett Regan, senior Mark Van Guilder and sophomores Kevin Deeth and Ryan Thang (NSH). Also returning on defence is Carolina Hurricanes prospect Kyle Lawson.

The Denver Pioneers finished 4th in the WCHA standings and followed that up with a first round exit to Wisconsin in the WCHA playoffs. The Pioneers are ranked to finish around the same position in the standings once again. The biggest key loss for the Pioneers is in goal whth starter Glenn Fisher not returning, but much of the Denver core remains from a year ago, and what was considered a young and inexperienced defensive corps has now gained a full season together and should be poised to make its mark by the time the Frozen Four sweeps into the Rocky Mountains in 2008.

Users can watch both games of this weekend's Notre Dame/Denver series at Hockey Webcasts, with the first game starting on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 EST, and Game 2 on Friday, Oct. 19, also at 7:30 EST. If you are looking for more NCAA action, #1 ranked North Dakota will face #4 ranked Boston College on Friday Oct. 19 at 8:00 EST. All of these game links will be available for free on the homepage of hockeywebcasts.com. You can also access the games by visiting the respective team pages in our NCAA section under 'Find A Team Webcast'.
